Lewiston/Machias- Kevin S. Geel, 64, of Lewiston, formerly of Machias, died peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2020 at the Edgewood Rehabilitation Center in Farmington following a long illness.
Kevin was born in Machias, Maine on June 1, 1956 the son of Carleton S. and Mary R. (Flaherty) Geel. He attended local schools graduating from Washington Academy in the class of 1974. In 1978 he earned his BS in Ed. from the University of Maine at Machias, and in 1988 received his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Maine at Orono.
Kevin began his teaching career with SAD #77 in East Machias. In 1991 he assumed a position with the Lake Region School District where he worked as a special education teacher, head teacher, and I.E.P. Coordinator. Kevin was an advocate for children with special needs and worked tirelessly to insure that every child received an education. Throughout his career he was awarded many accolades and commendations for his exceptional abilities as an educator. In 2015, he retired from the Lake Region School District with 25 years of service.
It will go without saying that Kevin, not only possessed a brilliant mind but was also an extremely gifted and talented artist who maintained a great devotion to the art of technique. His work with oil paints were flawless, precise and executed with great detail. He was a talented performer and was well known for his many roles on the stage with the Downriver Theatre Company, including his most memorable as Melvin P. Thorpe in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”. He was one of the founding members of the Maine Gay Men’s Chorus and was a featured soloist on several occasions. He was a longtime member of Friends of Bill W. helping many along the way.
Above all he was a true and trusted friend. Always willing to lend an ear, an encouraging word, or just providing a shoulder to lean on. You could always count on Kevin to be there when you needed him most.
Kevin was predeceased by his father, Carleton S. Geel. He is survived by his mother, Mary Geel-Clark and her husband Thatcher Clark of Marshfield; a sister, Cathy Willey-Curtis and her husband Charles of Cherryfield; three brothers, Alan Geel and his wife Terry Cole of Whitneyville, Duane Geel and his wife Sheila of Wesley, and Shawn Geel and his wife Jeannie of Perry; nieces and nephews; Christen (Arepea) and Jeremy Geel of Wesley, Patrick Geel of Bangor, and Danielle Willey of Ellsworth and Brian Willey of Cherryfield, both of whom he was also a Godfather to; an uncle, Earl Flaherty of East Machias; an aunt, Flora Palosky of Ellsworth, and many cousins, and special friends who loved him dearly. Kevin will be fondly remembered as quick witted with a loving and gentle soul.
A Celebration of Kevin’s Life will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at The Barn, 17 Summit Street, Portland, ME. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 1:00pm at Forest Hill Cemetery, Station Road, Jonesboro, Maine.
